As this winter approaches an official end on Sunday, March 20th at 12:30 am, are you feeling a bit unhappy, lethargic and tend to be a bit impatient? According to Urban Dictionary, you may be a victim of Cabin Fever!
This is not a medical condition but a result of spending too much time indoors. Too often you made the choice to stay home rather than go out and deal with winter’s ice and snow. Your morning run turned into extra time in bed. After waiting for the perfect weather and conditions for your daily ski you just realized your skis have not been used once. Yikes… it’s time for the cure!
You can begin right now by adjusting your diet. Yes, we are what we eat. Try a berry smoothie using blueberries, strawberries and raspberries to help reduce stress. Adding a banana will help reduce anxiety and improve sleep. Leafy greens, oatmeal, sunflower seeds, oranges, lentils, lean beef, oysters, wild salmon, eggs, yogurt and milk will help elevate your mood. Even dark chocolate will improve your mood. Sorry, a pint of chocolate ice cream or milk chocolate will not be much help.
We have a better idea. Getaway to the White Mountains! Get out of your house away from your daily routine and reconnect with family and friends. There is always something new and different to see and do in every season. Join a yoga class or sign up for a day at the Fitness Center which is always easier to do when you have the whole day free rather than trying to fit something in to a busy schedule. Treat yourself to some quiet time with a massage. Sign up for a guided snowshoe tour with a naturalist and look for tracks of animals becoming more active as temperatures rise. Take a unique guided winter sightseeing tour above treeline on Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast and home to the world’s highest wind recorded. Did you know you can even fly through the trees on one of the area’s zipline or canopy tours? Don’t forget about the benefits of shopping. Shop hundreds of name brand outlets, boutiques and craft shops – tax-free all of the time!
